Experimental and theoretical research activities are centred around the relation between molecular interactions and macroscopic as well as spectroscopy propeties of solutions. The most recent studies involve the use of supercritical solvents and different types of solutes. The solvents employed are the typical nonpolar or slightly polar fluids used in supercritical extraction, but also solvents with much stronger intermolecular interactions have been studied, namely ammonia and water. We have been able to demonstrate the vital role of the first neighbours to ion pairs in supercritical ammonia in determining the thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties of KI as a probe solute. Work is being extended to supercritical water, but in this case research is done only employing molecular simulation techniques and electronic structure calculations. The difference between the two hydorgen-bonded supercritical solvents was found to be remarkable.
We are starting the study of alkali metals in supercritical ammonia to analyze the effect of solvation employing spectrophotometry in the near UV part of the spectrum.
